While this could be read as a stand-alone, I recommend reading the series in order. This is the first story since the Blue Mountain survivors have joined the Enclave so it has a slightly different feel to it than the previous books. It has all the things that have made this series so exciting; action, aliens, humor, suspense, and steamy romance. The story moves along fast with some surprises. This story features Niko and Mac as the main couple, but we also get to see many of the other characters that we know and love. There are obvious hints of couples that will be getting their stories in future books. While the war against the aliens continues from book to book, there is a HEA for the main couple and there isn’t a cliff hanger. This is my favorite of the series and I can’t wait to read the next one to see if Ms. Hackett is able to make that one my new favorite!Product details

Russian ex-assassin turned artist paired with kickass badass soldier who is a closet foodie.
You had me at artist and foodie.
And all this happened in a new location and home, the Enclave luxurious digs for our embattled Blue Mountain base survivors.
And it took me nine books until I got used to the crazy space dino aliens with the focus on a drone killer aka crazy bird who has a penchant for drones. Talk about nesting instincts for this alien bird creature.
And my heart almost stopped when I read the part of an injured Marcus (Gasp!) Nooooooo! *wails* Please tell me our fav Marcus and Elle will survive the alien invasion and kick alien butt until the end. Thankyou for Marcus and Elle snipets in almost every book.
And please give them, Hell Squad and the rest of your pairings their babies to replenish a decimated population, more weddings and happily-ever-afters *pleading puppy eyes*

Anna Hackett does it again! The Hell Squad series presents us with an alternate reality, where aliens have invaded Earth for the purpose of harvesting all resources, including humans. These are not nice aliens. The creatures are all reptilian, intelligent, ruthless, and downright nasty. Niko is a leader of the Enclave, a haven for the few surviving humans in Sidney, Australia. He falls for another survivor, soldier Mackenna Carides. The problem is that Mac is not very open to relationships, having been taught since childhoods that attachments are not a good thing. Niko is determined to win her over, something that gets complicated considering the alien war for survival they are fighting and his own shadowy past.
Hell Squad is one of the most entertaining Sci-Fi romance series currently being published. The writing is excellent, the characters are engaging, and the overall storyline keeps you wanting more. Each book focuses on a different couple, something I consider a plus since they can technically be read as stand-alone novels. That being said, the series is definitely best read in order since the overall story arc moves each story along. Fans of the series will really like Niko. Newcomers to the series will also enjoy it, but might feel a bit lost. The series has a lot of characters and, considering this is book #9, a lot of story to catch up on if this is the first installment you read.
Niko Hell Squad 9 is the first book to take place in the Enclave. Mac is second for Squad 9 and is as tough as they come. S he protects her heart at all costs and does everything she can to help the survivors of Blue Mountain to find their place in the Enclave. Everyone is learning to trust and blend into their new home. Mac has noticed the new leader of the Enclave, Niko, an artist, is watching her, just as she is watching him.
Niko has secrets that he doesn't share. Once a Russian spy and assassin, he now wants nothing more than to be able to help people and pursue his art...and Mac. But not even the security of the Enclave is safe. The alien invaders are constantly trying to find and eradicate humans by any means and something is hunting the drones used by the Squads to keep the patrols safe and an eye on the enemy. When faced with the continued loss of the drones, Squad 9 goes out to hunt the hunter and Niko goes with them.
What is hunting the drones is not of Earth nor is it Raptor born, and it is not alone.
I enjoyed Niko as we got to meet some of the people living at the Enclave and see how the two groups are beginning to blend together. Mac and Niko are our first couple from this new place and after their unique meeting at the end of the last book, I was really looking forward to this one. Both these characters are passionate and dedicated and they haven't opened themselves up to anyone else in awhile.
Mac grew up with a tough father and 3 older brothers and she's been taught not to get attached to anything. Niko has a past in the Russian Intelligence Agency that he'd rather keep hidden for fear of what Mac will think of him. But under the pressure of stopping more of their drones being taken down by the aliens, Mac and Niko must work together and learn to trust.
I enjoyed Mac's strength and determination -- she's a tough, kick a** woman and I appreciate how Anna Hackett isn't afraid to write a strong female lead. At the same time, we see some of Mac's vulnerabilities and her softer side and as Niko discovers this too he encourages Mac to be her whole self with him. I also enjoyed Niko who has a rough past but is a truly gentle person with an artistic soul. Niko is a bit naughty and I loved how his more playful side helped Mac loosen up. It's hard for Niko to watch Mac go into the field and risk her life each day but he also respects her skills and strength. It takes a bit for both Mac and Niko to work out being together and they make some mistakes along the way but in the end they work things out.
With plenty of action and sexy romance, Niko was a great read and I can't wait for more.
